Springdale Veterans' Memorial

For a number of years, Springdale City Council has discussed ways to honor the men and women of the community who have fought for our freedom – many of them who gave the ultimate sacrifice. In response, Springdale contracted with CDS to work in conjunction with the Springdale Veterans' Memorial Fundraising Committee to begin planning the long-standing dream and overdue tribute to these men and women.

A City-owned green space at the gateway to the City’s Municipal Complex at the northeast corner of Springfield Pike (S.R. 4) and Lawnview Avenue was selected as the site for the memorial. A permanent gift easement from the adjoining property owner will allow the memorial to be built as envisioned.

The concept selected by Springdale presents a number of different opportunities to invoke memories and inform visitors, who will move through a set of carefully controlled sequences designed to raise awareness and engender a sense of respect and honor. A sense of ceremony, honored separation, defense of cherished memories, and a high regard for traditional values are emphasized in the design.

Memorial features include “Guardian Sentinel” obelisks engraved with the seals of the four branches of service, commemorative markers featuring stories / events to educate people of all ages, and an arch of flagpoles displaying the various service flags anchored by a pole with the United States flag.

Memorial bricks will be placed at the bases of two curved stone walls with an illuminated cascade of water over them. The garden is at the heart of the memorial containing life-sized bronze statues of a soldier and a sailor to emphasize the individual and personal nature of their sacrifice. The focal point of the garden is four memorial stones honoring the four military service branches and one stone engraved with the names of those in the community whom have perished in the line of duty.
